I used to think it mattered and for awhile after I came out, it did. Definitely, recognizing and affirming that I was a lesbian was of utmost importance. I made sure that EVERYONE knew. I haven't spent a lot of time analyzing it yet, but I believe that the more comfortable and secure I am, the less need I have to share with everyone the particulars that go on in my bedroom.
